President's Report

We have a lot of good things going on right now!

Last week NAHU CEO Janet Trautwein came to Atlanta and traveled with me and Kevin Smith, President of the Atlanta Association, while we visited some carriers and large agencies to garner additional support for our Association. I want to thank Kevin Smith for scheduling and orchestrating all the meetings and both Kevin and Janet for their time investment in our Association.

Our lobbyist, Michael Wardrip, is also working hard laying foundation for GAHU to make a push at funding a state High Risk Pool this year. He is also meeting with a number of legislators and allies as we prepare for this year’s legislative session. Please encourage Michael when you see him by thanking him for his hard work on our behalf.

We also had our first shot across the bow when an article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle entitled, “Why insurers should contribute to state’s health” was posted on September 12. The article proposed that our state’s health insurance companies should begin paying 3% to 5% of their profits into the state’s health funds. We submitted a response article which was published September 26 entitled “No new taxes for state’s health insurers”. A copy of our response can be found on our website at www.GAHU.org. Special thanks to Michael Wardrip, Suzanne Gipalo, Russ Childers and Kelly Loussades for their expertise and assistance in producing the response.

In conclusion, the most critical thing you can do for yourself and your Association in the next thirty days is to read up on the candidate’s positions and make a commitment to vote. Your livelihoods may depend on it!

The Georgia LTC Partnership Update

Please be aware of these impending and important changes...

Georgia has added 2 hours of state specific content to their LTC Partnership training requirements.  The 2 hour state specific content can be included in the 8 hour course or can also be completed as a stand alone course.

When this was announced, CE Providers had already received approval of training courses which may not have included the 2 hour state specific content.  They are in talks with the state of Georgia's DOI to assure that producers who have already taken a 8 hour course approved by Georgia in good faith will not have to complete any  additional training when the new rules are implemented. This is still to be determined.  Contact your LTC Partnership CE Provider for more details.

Total health-care costs for Atlanta employees, including employee contributions and out-of-pocket costs, are projected to rise 9 percent to $3,549 in 2009.'
