President's Report

My term as President is ending, but I leave you in good hands. Blake Watts and his team are gearing up for a fantastic year!

It has been an honor serving you during this tumultuous time. I must say that I cannot imagine a better group of people to fight to protect than you all. Our fight is long from over, and we’ll need to stick together (and recruit more) to defeat government rationed healthcare. But as I go I leave you with one more story from my experiences…

Summer’s coming, are you ready to work?

Proverbs 30:25 reads, “Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer”.

Ants are really small, but they have mastered the ability to work together, focus on their work and work hard while they have the chance.

I remember when I was getting my sales start in this industry Bill Pritchard, of Pritchard and Jerden, said to me, “Almost everyone you know will slack off during the summer months and around Christmas time. That’s when you need to hit the phones! People are still having claim problems, wanting to reduce their costs and wondering why their agent hasn’t called in so long!”

At that time, friends of mine in the industry kept telling me how “fruitless” it was going to be to pursue business in the summer, since everyone would just want to wait until school starts back.

I also remember how happy I was (and had I known how young I truly looked and acted, I should have been even more grateful) when I wrote that first “June 1” group.  My guess is their more experienced agent was taking it easy for the summer and it was just the sort of advantage I needed to get my start.

I worked almost every day that summer and even told my parents and relatives that I would have to work through most of the Holiday’s as well.

Obviously, having kids of my own now helps me balance my time with family, but I still have not forgotten that lesson. I obtained some good business from agents who, I am sure, were more knowledgeable than I was at the time.

Of course, I am not suggesting that we should not take vacations or fear taking them.  What I am suggesting is that sometimes we talk ourselves out of successful opportunities. We erroneously convince ourselves that certain things are going to happen, whether it be for a few summer months or for a multi-year Congressional term, and we stop doing our best work. We then fulfill our own prophesy and our sales and retention drop.

Bottom line, we still have the same opportunity today that we had 5 years ago, but we must do our best to serve our customers. They need to see the difference between the private insurance industry, with our reimbursements, services and response times, compared to Medicare and Medicaid and the government’s reimbursements, services and response times.

No one can compare to us when we are at our best. Let’s work hard and show our customers, and this nation, all they stand to lose if they allow the government to ration their healthcare.

Sincerely,

Shan Ricketts - President

Did you know that there are 3.6 agents per 1000 Georgia residents?  At 9,685,744 Georgians – that gives us some 34,000 agents in the state!

Meaning GAHU members truly represent </= 1% of insurance professionals.  We are men and women dedicated to the preservation and forward movement of responsible health insurance products and services and access to quality health care.

Quite frankly, the entire insurance industry as we know it  is at stake.  Favorable income tax rates are at stake!  Healthcare tax incentives are at stake!

Follow three simple steps to encourage membership growth during these important times:

1.)  Take a minute to freshen up on the issues.  AHU makes staying connected easy!
2.)  Determine if it will be 'fear of loss or desire to gain'...recognize the conflict at hand with our great democracy's future.   Chose your motivator and get going!
3.)  Take action:
a.) Talk to people - every one who will give you a minute.  Encourage every insurance professional to support a professional organization that is supporting and/or collaborating with GAHU and similar minded credible organizations!  Believe me - people want to know what's the future of healthcare is looking like.  Every resident on American soil has a stake in this issue- whether they know it or not!
b.) Stand on Guard with your Legislators - get connected with Operation Shout and register with your Congressmen and Legislators.

Give your clients these tips to get the best paramedical exam ‘grade’ possible:

In addition to the normal pre-paramedical exam instructions:

1.)  Limit salt and high-cholesterol foods twenty-four (24) hours prior to the exam.
2.)  Limit caffeine and nicotine at least (2) hours prior to appointment.
3.)  Avoid strenuous exercise and refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages and using nasal decongestants for at least twelve (12) hours prior to the appointment.

Legislative News

On June 4, 2009, GA DOI published a Model Georgia State Continuation Coverage Election Notice as required by SB 94.  Once read, its purpose and meaning should be evident, but there are some issues that warrant summary here:

·      An assistance eligible individual (AEI) who had a qualifying event between September 1, 2008 and February 17, 2009 can elect a period of coverage that begins as late as 60 days from the date of their notice of eligibility under SB 94 and ARRA. .

  • Such coverage may last as long as it would have had the AEI been eligible for COBRA and had elected such coverage as would have been required after the qualifying event, but in no case will such period of coverage last more than nine months.
  • An AEI can elect, if available, coverage under a HDHP without fear they will be ineligible for premium reduction.
  • Language that changes treatment of claims experience for "covered individuals" under state continuation apply whether or not such individual is an AEI.  This and the option to elect HDHP coverage are the only features of SB 94 that make a permanent change in state continuation law that survive beyond ARRA and its effect of law.

We know there will be lots of other issues and questions and are at your service to help you and your clients through this complex process.  We sincerely value you and your service to Georgia's health insurance consumers.
