Quote of the Month
People who achieve daily success have learned to conquer four common time wasters such as:

Laziness:
Time put to no useful purpose, not even relaxation.

Procrastination:
Putting off things that should be done now.

Distraction:
Time frittered away on the details of side issues, to the detriment of the main issue.

Impatience:
Lack of preparation, thoroughness, or perseverance, usually resulting in time-consuming mistakes.

President's Report

It's the most wonderful time of the year!  No, not speaking of the Holidays.  School is back in (for most of us, anyway!), summer schedules are over and now it's time for some renewed energy and focus.  Speaking of energy and focus, those are the exact two qualities we need from each of our members over the next several weeks.

As we all know, the August recess is in full swing, and there's lots of in-district meeting and town hall activity all over the state.  GAHU needs our members to show up and be heard at these meetings, in your representatives' offices, and anywhere else you can tell the story of sensible Health Reform.  It would be especially effective if you were able to take along letters and/or short testimonials from physicians, patients and clients and make sure your representative knows that for every voter he/she actually sees, there are many more Americans who have a personal stake in this process.

One other thing….There has been quite a bit of negative press surrounding conduct at some of the town hall meetings.  While I'm sure those situations are not the norm, I would be remiss if I did not communicate to you all that GAHU expects its Members to be a part of the solution, not an emotional sideshow.  This is very serious business, and the issue IS emotional for most of us.  And that is why it's so important that we be the ethical and behavioral standard by which all activists are judged from now on.  Show up, be heard and make change a reality!

I'll leave you with a quote I read in a book recently, but first I'll give some context as to why I chose this quote.  It is my opinion that true power comes from being able to talk to others, find common ground and then take action.  I read this line recently in the book "The Next 100 Years" by George Friedman:

"Emotion doesn't make history.  Power does."

Let's make history, people!

Stacking the Deck...
Mid-med or limited medical plans are fast becoming an alternate option to help offset medical increases.  Many clients are raising deductibles and offering the supplemental plan as a voluntary option.  If you are using this strategy, it's good to address the following topics with your client so that they can make an informed decision:

1.  Are there areas in which the plan will not offset the reduction in major medical benefits?
2.  Is the plan guarantee issue to all employees?
3.  Does the plan have a pre-existing condition limitation?

It is your responsibility to ensure that your client and their employees understand the limitations of the plans being offered and how this will affect employees' financial security.

Wellness...

Regardless of the National Healthcare Reform out comes - preventing catastrophic claims is still the most viable long term approach to reducing claims, improving workfoce productivity and decreasing employees' costs associated with lost time and out of pocket cost sharing.  Your role in guiding and helping employers come to terms with the commitment will be key.  The number of public and private resources are unlimited.  An example can be found at:  http://www.healthypeople.gov/
